Listings of Garden Workshops

Below is information on each free workshop held Saturdays from 10am-11am. Workshops are open to those 18 and up, starting October 1st through November 12th. All workshops will be held at Beauty's Community Garden - 3201 Airline Drive, Houston, TX 77022.

Workshop 1

1--Characteristics of a Fruitful Garden (2160 × 1080 px)

Characteristics of a Fruitful Garden: The What, Where and Why to Plant

Join us at Beauty's Community Garden, Saturday, October 1, 2022 from 10am - 11am for this free one hour workshop. We will examine what environment makes a garden a home for fruits, vegetables, and herbs to thrive.

This workshop supplies materials necessary to create the garden (container, soil, seeds or plants, fertilizer, etc.) Texas A&M University Garden Course funded, in part, by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Session will include:
  • Identification of the characteristics of a fruitful garden site.
  • Discovering the best locations for planting vegetables .
  • Learning the unique planting needs this time of year.
2--Soil and Compost Secrets (2160 × 1080 px) (1)

Soils and Compost: Healthy Plant Secrets

Join us at Beauty's Community Garden, Saturday, October 8, 2022, from 10am - 11am for this free hour workshop. We will explore the underground plant ecosystem- soil and compost crucial to supporting plant health.

This workshop supplies materials necessary to create the garden (container, soil, seeds or plants, fertilizer, etc.) Texas A&M University Garden Course funded, in part, by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Session will Include:
  • Identification of a plant's needs and the main components of a loamy soil (Sand, Silt, and Clay).
  • Evaluation of appropriate soils to support plants.
  • Identification of materials best for home composting.
  • Creation of an eco-friendly compost.

Workshop 3

3--Raised Beds and Container Gardens (2160 × 1080 px) (1)

Raised Beds and Container Gardens: Settings for Thriving Fruits, Veggies, and Herbs

Join us at Beauty's Community Garden, Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 10am - 11am for this free hour workshop. We will gather hands to learn how to kickstart your garden space as a setting for plants to grow.

This workshop supplies materials necessary to create the garden (container, soil, seeds or plants, fertilizer, etc.) Texas A&M University Garden Course funded, in part, by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Session will Include:
  • Learn to plant a container or raised bed garden with transplants or seeds.

Workshop 4

4--Maintaining Your Garden (2160 × 1080 px) (1)

Maintaining Your Garden: Techniques Supporting Healthy Veggies

Join us at Beauty's Community Garden, Saturday, October 22, 2022, from 10am - 11am for this free hour workshop. Become a Garden Whisperer embarking on a quest to upkeep healthy, growing vegetables!

This workshop supplies materials necessary to create the garden (container, soil, seeds or plants, fertilizer, etc.) Texas A&M University Garden Course funded, in part, by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Session will Include:
  • Identification of good maintenance practices specific to vegetable gardens.
  • Utilization of a journal to help with the observation of plant health and growth,
  • investigation of problems affecting plants, and the documentation of solutions.

Workshop 5

Diseases and Insects: Cultivating Good Bacteria and Friendly Bugs

Join us at Beauty's Community Garden, Saturday, November 5, 2022, from 10am - 11am for this free hour workshop. We will examine the causes, symptoms, and preventive measures of vegetable diseases and disorders keeping our plants healthy, and detect helpful and harmful insects of our garden.

This workshop supplies materials necessary to create the garden (container, soil, seeds or plants, fertilizer, etc.) Texas A&M University Garden Course funded, in part, by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Session will Include:
  • Examination of vegetable disease and disorders causes and symptoms
  • Examination of  prevention and treatment methods of vegetable diseases and disorders
  • Identification of beneficial and harmful insects of a garden.

Workshop 6

6--Harvest, Handling and Storing (2160 × 1080 px) (1)

Harvest, Handling, and Storing: Help Your Fruits and Veggies Live a Long Life

Join us at Beauty's Community Garden, Saturday, November 12, 2022, from 10am - 11am for this free hour workshop. We will follow the best practices of harvesting, handling, and storing produce preserving the life of produce.

This workshop supplies materials necessary to create the garden (container, soil, seeds or plants, fertilizer, etc.) Texas A&M University Garden Course funded, in part, by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Session will Include:
  • Exploration of best practices for harvesting produce.
  • Exploration of best practices for handling produce.
  • Exploration of best practices for storing produce.
  • Examination of how to save seeds.
